As part of The National Gallery's competition, Take One Picture, we have introduced all pupils to 'An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump', by Joseph Wright of Derby (1768).
To begin with, we did not tell the pupils anything about the image. We simply asked them to look at the image and contribute their thoughts and questions. The image appeared on computer screens, in the hall, in assembly, during lessons and on the walls. Pupils used post-it notes, that were dotted around the school, as a way to record their ideas and thoughts. These were all brought together as a starting point for our art work/other work based on the image. The hundreds of ideas, that were generated, were narrowed down by our school Cultural Ambassadors. The thought provoking image fuelled the pupils' imagination. See the chosen questions on the page Our Questions. |
